PK and What Army?

March 7th, 2006

Last night I recorded with PK and What Army?. It was a lot of fun! I hadn’t really expected it to be as cool as it was.
We recorded at Jack Straw Studios with Doug Haire. At first, we tracked some compositions by Jessica Lurie and some by Paul Kemmish. Hopefully, these will go on a CD for the group. We then took a break and tracked for KEXP 90.3 FM’s radio show, “Sonarchy“. I think that turned out awesome!
The musicians on hand were:

  • PK-Composer/Bandleader/Upright Bass
  • Jessica Lurie-Conductor/Sax/Flute
  • Amy Denio-Accordion/Clarinet/Voice
  • Matt Crane-Drums
  • Ben Thomas-Vibes, Percussion
  • Tom Swafford-Violin
  • Craig Flory-Bari Sax/Clarinet
  • Jon Ryser (myself)-Alto Sax
  • Tobi Stone-Bari Sax
  • Izaak Mills-Tenor Sax
  • Greg Sinibaldi-Tenor Sax
  • Marc Fendel-Alto Sax
  • Jim Knodle-Trumpet
  • Samantha Boshnack-Trumpet
  • Chris Stover-Trombone

  • It was so cool, everyone went all the way there. Sometimes the music asks you to go a bit insane. Each and every one of these musicians were willing and able to answer the call. I was so impressed!
Doug Haire is so great. He was absolutely up to the task of recording such a large acoustic ensmble improvising live. I’ve known Doug for many years and he has always inspired me. He mentioned that he had been talking to Davee C and that they were going to try to get Dub Championz on the show. That would be so much fun!
At any rate, I can’t wait to hear the stuff we laid down for PK and What Army?. I guess I’ll stay tuned - you too!
